The Corrugated Cable

Happy release to the Corrugated Cable!

Who else loves beginner cables in a thick yarn to create a fisherman-style sweater? Because that was my goal with the Corrugated Cable and I think it worked out beautifully. That big, bold cable down the front center may look complicated, but the widest cable is a classic 3/3 Right Cross. Most are 3/2 crosses! And with an Aran weight gauge of 16 x 20, it knits up pretty quickly, which helps with the fact that mens sweaters are generally a bigger beast to knit.

So, I need to talk about the yarn since it’s no longer available.

The yarn is Eddie Bauer Wool-Paca worsted and while this sweater was in testing (with friends, my first public test knit is finishing soon!), the stockist for the yarn declared they’re shutting down. RIP Joann’s.

The yarn was a solid quality at a great value so I hope it finds a new home. For now though, check yarnsub for substitution ideas. On the Lovecrafts page for this pattern I have provided a list of some of their yarns that would work well. When substituting yarn for this pattern, consider:

  • Match the yardage, not the grams.

  • Look for something that is worsted spun (not worsted gauge). This means it will have multiple plies (yarn with multiple strands wound together). This will create a nice definition for the cables.

  • Get an Aran weight yarn with which you can achieve a gauge of 16 x 20 = 4” x 4” on 6.0 mm (US 9) needles in stockinette.

The construction of the garment is pretty straight forward for a drop-shoulder sweater. Cast on the back shoulder as a straight line and work down the panel in stockinette, put those stitches on hold and create the front left, then the front right, then join them and continue working down the front. Then join the front to the back and down the body for to a 1x1 hem. Sleeves are picked up and worked in the round in stockinette while also tapering to a 1x1 cuff. And finally, the collar is pickup and knit and then folded over.

I won’t ever call a sweater pattern “beginner-friendly” but I believe this is as close as cables can get and I’m just thrilled with the outcome. I’ve created the hashtag #CorrugatedCable in the hopes that I can see some of your creations!
